History of the Sportsman's Holiday

Sportsman’s Holiday, as we know it today, began in 1959. Prior to 1959, Sweet Home celebrated “Frontier Days” a celebration that was held in August or September each year and brought thousands of residents together from the outlying communities. Before Frontier Days the community celebrated Quartzville Mining Picnic where they had Gold Panning contests and also the Sweet Home Fair. They even had a logging show, the Logger Jubilee, and the Chips and Splinters Talent Show. Frontier Days was formed in 1948. It was organized to help build a community pool. For the first five years of Frontier Days all proceeds from the celebration went towards a fundraiser for a pool at the High School. Later, in 1954 the money raised during Sportsman’s Holiday would be used to purchase books for the recently opened Sweet Home Library. During the years 1948-1952 the organization raised $29,000 the total costs to build a new pool. The pool was constructed and opened unofficially at the 1952 Sportsman’s Holiday when Miss Swimming Pool was crowned…..

The pool officially opened in 1953…. and those Queens from that point on were called Miss Sweet Home and participated in a bathing beauty contest each year at the local talent show, Chips and Splinters. The Chips and Splinters program of 1952 drew 1100 spectators. Although they continued to crown Miss Sweet Home at the talent show each year….1957 was the last year for a Frontier Days Queen …..by 1957 the community seemed to be loosing interest in Frontier Days. Sweet Home was growing…..Foster Dam was being constructed, logging was a major industry and the Community decided to go in a new direction. They decided on a outdoor sports theme ….thus…..Sportsman’s Holiday……however, it was too late to get a celebration together for that year….so in 1958 no celebration was held.

However, in 1959, Sweet Home presented their 1st Sportsman’s Holiday Celebration in conjunction with the Oregon Centennial. In 1959, Trudy Adams, was crowned Queen and she, along her court, and the Centennial Band went on a ten community tour. The group traveled through Holley, Crawfordsville, Brownsville, Halsey, Shedd, Tangent, Albany, Jefferson, Scio and Lebanon to advertise Sweet Home’s 1st Sportsman’s Holiday. It was a record turnout.

Sportsman’s Holiday continued to be held in August through the sixties and into the seventies. In 1974 they moved the celebration to July. At various times through these years the celebration offered a Logging Show and Log Truck Competition, a rodeo, parade, talent show and many other events like frog jumping, gold panning, 10K run, car shows, square dancing, gun shows, treasure hunt put on by White’s Electronics,
Junior Parade and Junior Court, our own Chaperone, Mary Sue Reynolds, was on the Junior Court, also bed races, greased pig contest, fishing contest, sporting contests, boat parade and more.

In the seventies a fireworks display was also added along with speed boat races on Foster Lake. In the eighties they added the tuba-a-thon. Although towards the end of the eighties there seem to a lull in the interest of Sportsman’s Holiday. There is no record of there being a Sportsman’s Holiday court….although there continued to be a Rodeo Court. By the early nineties there were no longer boat races or the tube-a-thon. Chips and Splinters Talent show also ended.

Today the Sportsman’s Holiday main events consists of the Grand Parade, Kiddie Carnival, Logging Show and Rodeo, Fireworks and of course the Annual Queens Coronation. We hope that you enjoy Sportsman’s Holiday. We have enjoyed being Ambassadors for Sweet Home and
promoting the Sportsman’s Holiday Celebration. We look forward to seeing you all at the Parade, Carnival, Logging Show and Rodeo. Thank you for supporting the Court and Sportsman’s Holiday.
